Diazepam Valium is one of several medications known as benzodiazepines. It is used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures/fits. It is also used in hospitals to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms like sweating and trouble sleeping. It can also be used to help you relax prior to surgery or other medical or dental procedures. This is referred to as a pre-med. It works by boosting the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a relaxing molecule in the brain.
What would happen if I stopped taking it?
If you have been taking diazepam at a high dose or for an extended period of time, your doctor would most likely recommend progressively reducing your dose.If you suddenly stop taking it, you may have the following negative effects:
- confusion
- Seizures or fits
- depression
- Feeling anxious or irritable
- sweating
